The i2010 initiative and beyond

Yvo Volman

In September 2005 the European Commission launched its digital libraries initiative with the aim to make Europe's cultural and scientific heritage more accessible and better usable in the online environment. The presentation will give an overview of the progress since 2005 across Europe, and will sketch the history of Europeana as a common access point to Europe's digitised cultural heritage, as well as future challenges for the site. The presentation will also touch upon questions around the role and tasks of public cultural institutions in the internet age and the need to keep public domain material in the public domain once it is digitised.
